True E-Mail Filtering Comes To iPhone/iOS

Ever wish you could apply filters or rules to incoming email on your iPhone or other iOS device? Mail Rules is a Mobile Substrate extension, available for $1.99 on the Cydia Store, that lets you do just this. And it's pretty impressive.

I have 2 e-mail accounts enabled on my iPhone (Account A + Account B), so I went into my Settings.app and set the mail rules that you'll see in the screenshots below (My Rule: any e-mail with the subject 'Mail Rule Test' will be moved to a sub-folder belonging to Account B.) Simple enough, right? Next, I sent a test email that matched my rule's criteria.

Here's what really got me ... I sent the e-mail from Account A to Account A, and sure enough, after the email showed up in Account A's Inbox for a few seconds, it magically moved to the specified sub-folder on Account B, just like I told it to. Pretty friggin' sweet.

You can match any text you'd like, on the following criteria:

  • Account
  • Headers
  • Recipient
  • Sender
  • Subject

And apply the following actions to matched e-mails:

  • Delete message
  • Mark As read
  • Mark As Unread
  • Copy To Folder
  • Move To Folder

In conclusion, if you need to filter your incoming [iOS] email, this will be 2 bucks ($1.99) well spent. Keep in mind that if you purchase and install Mail Rules, you can configure and create your new rules in your Settings.app, under Mail > Rules, there's no separate app icon included!
